Keeping God in Your Marriage

Marriage is one of God’s most beautiful gifts. It’s a covenant, not just a contract. When two people come together in love, God desires to be at the very center of that relationship. But in the busyness of life—work schedules, children, finances, and responsibilities—it can be easy to drift and forget that the strength of our marriage comes from Him. So, how do we intentionally keep God in our marriage?
1. Pray Together Daily
Prayer is the lifeline of your marriage. When you pray together, you’re not only talking to God—you’re also inviting Him into your struggles, your joys, and your decisions. A short prayer before bed, holding hands at the dinner table, or even a whispered prayer before leaving for work reminds you that your marriage is under His care.
2. Study God’s Word Together
The Bible is full of wisdom for couples. Verses like “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:12) remind us that God is the third strand in a strong marriage. Reading scripture together, whether in a morning devotion or a weekly Bible study, roots your relationship in truth instead of culture.
3. Worship as a Couple
Worship unites your hearts. Whether it’s attending church regularly, singing worship music at home, or serving in ministry together, worship helps you refocus on God’s goodness and keeps your marriage aligned with His purpose.
4. Forgive Quickly and Love Deeply
No marriage is perfect. But when we choose forgiveness, we reflect God’s grace. Colossians 3:13 reminds us to “forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Keeping God in your marriage means extending mercy and grace to your spouse, even when it’s hard.
5. Keep Christ at the Center of Decisions
From financial choices to parenting styles, ask God for guidance. Seek His wisdom before making big decisions and trust His timing. When both husband and wife are surrendered to God’s will, unity becomes stronger.
Final Encouragement
A marriage rooted in God doesn’t mean it will be without challenges—but it does mean you’ll face those challenges together, strengthened by His presence. Keeping God in your marriage is less about perfection and more about daily, intentional steps that draw you closer to Him and to each other.
Remember, when you and your spouse walk hand in hand with God, your marriage becomes a testimony of His faithfulness and love.
