Don’t Let the Kids Come Between You: Protecting Your Blended Family Marriage

Sometimes, without even realizing it, your marriage gets pushed to the bottom of the list.

We have learned that children need healthy parents, but they also need to see a healthy marriage. Protecting your marriage does not mean loving your children less. It means making sure the relationship that holds your family together does not get neglected.

Put Your Marriage Back on the Priority List

Blended family life can make it easy to become “team parents” instead of husband and wife. You may spend so much time discussing with the kids that you forget to talk about each other.

Make time for conversations that have nothing to do with parenting.

Ask, “How are you doing?” instead of only asking, “Did you talk to the kids?” Laugh together. Go for a walk. Have coffee after the children go to bed. Small moments of connection can remind you that you are still best friends, not just co-parents.

Don’t Let Parenting Decisions Divide You

One of the biggest blended family challenges can be disagreements about discipline, boundaries, or parenting roles.

Before making major decisions, talk privately with your spouse. Give each other room to share concerns without immediately becoming defensive. Remember, you are on the same team.

Ecclesiastes 4:9 reminds us that two are better than one. Your marriage becomes stronger when you face parenting challenges together instead of against each other.

Give Your Spouse Grace

Blended families can bring complicated emotions. A child may struggle with a new family structure. A stepparent may feel unsure about their role. A biological parent may feel protective.

Give each other grace.

Not every difficult moment means your marriage is failing. Sometimes it simply means your family is adjusting.

Instead of asking, “Whose fault is this?” try asking, “How can we handle this together?”

That one question can change the direction of a conversation.

This Week’s Marriage Challenge

Here are five simple ways to strengthen your marriage:

  • Have a 15-minute spouse check-in: Talk about your relationship—not the kids.

  • Schedule one intentional connection: Date night, coffee, a walk, or even sitting together after bedtime.

  • Speak positively about your spouse: Let your children hear you honor and appreciate each other.

  • Discuss parenting privately: Avoid correcting or undermining each other in front of the children.

  • Pray together: Ask God for wisdom, patience, unity, and a heart that serves one another.

Your Marriage Still Matters

Your children are important, but your marriage matters too. A strong marriage does not happen because life becomes easier. It grows because two people continue choosing friendship, communication, forgiveness, faith, and intentional love.

We know blended family life can be challenging. We also know it can be beautiful.

You don't have to build a perfect family. You can build a family where grace is present, love is intentional, and husband and wife continue choosing each other.
