How to Trust God for Marriage Restoration When You’re Hurting
When You Want Restoration but Don’t Know What to Do
There are seasons in marriage when you desperately want things to change, but you don't know how to get there.
Maybe communication has broken down. Maybe trust has been damaged. Maybe you and your spouse feel more like roommates than best friends. And sometimes, you pray,
“God, please restore our marriage,” while quietly wondering, can this really get better?
We understand that feeling.
Trusting God for marriage restoration doesn't mean pretending everything is okay. It means believing God is still working, even when you can't see the outcome.
Give God Your Marriage; Not Just Your Problems
When we pray for restoration, it's easy to give God a list of everything we want our spouse to change.
“Lord, change their attitude.”
“Lord, make them communicate better.”
“Lord, help them understand me.”
But restoration often begins when we allow God to work in us, too.
We can ask:
What does God want to teach me in this season?
Am I listening to understand or listening to respond?
Is there something I need to apologize for?
Am I creating space for my spouse to feel safe and heard?
How can I love my spouse while trusting God with the outcome?
We can't control our spouse's choices. But we can choose our own obedience, attitude, words, and actions.
Pray for Restoration, But Also Take Action
Prayer matters. We believe God can heal what feels broken and breathe new life into a marriage.
But prayer should lead us toward action.
If communication is strained, start with one honest conversation instead of trying to solve everything overnight.
If friendship has faded, intentionally spend time together without talking about problems.
If trust has been damaged, remember that trust is usually rebuilt through consistent actions over time—not one big conversation.
And if your marriage is facing serious challenges, don't be afraid to seek wise Christian marriage coaching or counseling. As Scripture reminds us, “Two are better than one” (Ecclesiastes 4:9).
God designed marriage for partnership, support, and connection.
Trust God With the Timeline
This may be one of the hardest parts of restoration.
We want God to fix everything now. But healing can take time.
You may need to have some conversations more than once. Forgiveness may happen in stages. Some days you'll feel hopeful; other days, you'll feel discouraged.
Don't confuse a slow process with a hopeless situation. Keep praying. Keep growing.
Keep choosing love. Keep inviting God into your marriage.
Try This This Week
Here are five simple ways to begin trusting God for restoration:
Pray together for five minutes. Keep it simple and honest.
Tell your spouse one thing you appreciate about them.
Have one conversation without trying to fix anything. Just listen.
Ask God to show you one area where you need to grow.
Take one intentional step toward rebuilding friendship.
God Is Not Finished With Your Story
Marriage restoration doesn't mean returning to exactly what your marriage used to be.
Sometimes God leads couples into something healthier, stronger, and more intentional than what they had before.
We believe your marriage is worth fighting for with wisdom, grace, humility, prayer, and intentional love.
Don't focus only on how far you have to go. Pay attention to the small steps and trust
God with your marriage, and trust Him with the process.
